Kiawah Island
is mainly a vacation resort island with a full time population of only 400 residents. Its major source of income is tourism. The island is only approximately 21 miles south of historic Charleston and therefore the business climate is basically the same as that city. Charleston has a stable, diverse economy with the leaders being the manufacturing sector, its research-oriented medical university, healthcare services, tourism, high-tech defense-related federal government facility and the Port of Charleston. The City of Charleston is continually working to develop strategies to address the needs of specialized businesses, including lab space and below market real estate offerings to new and growing companies.
